How the APFT Score Calculator Works

The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) measures Soldiers' physical readiness across three events: push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed 2-mile run. Each event generates a point value, with a combined maximum of 300 points. This calculator applies the linear scoring formula codified in FM 7-22: Holistic Health and Fitness to convert raw repetitions and run time into a standardized, age- and gender-adjusted score.

The APFT Scoring Formula

Each event score (S) uses a linear interpolation anchored to the Soldier's age and gender bracket:

S = 60 + 40 × (x − xmin) / (xmax − xmin)

The total APFT score is the sum of all three event scores:

Total APFT = Spush-ups + Ssit-ups + S2-mile run

Variable Definitions

  • S — Event point score (0 to 100+)
  • x — Soldier's raw performance (repetitions completed, or run time in seconds)
  • xmin — Minimum performance threshold for 60 points (passing) in the Soldier's age and gender bracket
  • xmax — Maximum performance threshold for 100 points in the Soldier's age and gender bracket

Formula Derivation

The formula performs a linear interpolation between two control points. When a Soldier's performance equals xmin, the expression returns exactly 60 — the minimum passing value. When performance equals xmax, the expression returns exactly 100. Scores below 60 indicate a failed event. For the 2-mile run, a faster time is better, so xmin is the slowest passing time and xmax is the fastest graded time; because both numerator and denominator become negative for a time between those bounds, they cancel correctly and preserve the linear relationship without requiring a separate inverted formula.

Age and Gender Scoring Brackets

Per FM 7-22 (October 2020), scoring tables are divided by gender (Male/Female) and ten age groups: 17–21, 22–26, 27–31, 32–36, 37–41, 42–46, 47–51, 52–56, 57–61, and 62+. The xmin and xmax thresholds shift with each bracket to reflect age-related changes in muscular endurance and cardiovascular capacity, meaning equivalent point scores represent equivalent levels of military readiness across age groups.

Sample Scoring Thresholds by Bracket

  • Male, Age 17–21: Push-ups — 42 reps (60 pts) to 71 reps (100 pts); 2-Mile Run — 15:54 (60 pts) to 13:00 (100 pts)
  • Female, Age 17–21: Push-ups — 19 reps (60 pts) to 42 reps (100 pts); 2-Mile Run — 18:54 (60 pts) to 15:36 (100 pts)
  • Male, Age 37–41: Push-ups — 34 reps (60 pts) to 60 reps (100 pts); 2-Mile Run — 17:00 (60 pts) to 13:36 (100 pts)

Passing Standards and Performance Benchmarks

A Soldier must score a minimum of 60 points in every event to pass the APFT. Failing any single event constitutes an overall APFT failure regardless of the combined total. The minimum combined passing score is 180 points out of 300. Key performance benchmarks include:

  • 180–224 points: Minimum pass; meets basic Army fitness requirements
  • 225–269 points: Above average; satisfies many professional military education eligibility criteria
  • 270+ points: Qualifies for the Army Physical Fitness Badge (Distinguished), requiring at least 90 points per event
  • 300 points: Perfect score — maximum performance (100 pts) in all three events

Worked Example Calculation

A male Soldier in the 22–26 age group completes 65 push-ups, 72 sit-ups, and runs 2 miles in 14:30. Using illustrative bracket thresholds of xmin=40 and xmax=75 for push-ups; xmin=45 and xmax=80 for sit-ups; xmin=996s (16:36) and xmax=780s (13:00) for the run:

  • Push-ups: S = 60 + 40 × (65 − 40) / (75 − 40) = 60 + 28.6 = 89 pts
  • Sit-ups: S = 60 + 40 × (72 − 45) / (80 − 45) = 60 + 30.9 = 91 pts
  • 2-Mile Run (870s): S = 60 + 40 × (870 − 996) / (780 − 996) = 60 + 23.3 = 83 pts
  • Total APFT Score: 89 + 91 + 83 = 263 points (Above average; pass)

Methodology Sources

This calculator's scoring logic derives from the official U.S. Army field manual FM 7-22: Holistic Health and Fitness. Event standards and scoring table values are cross-referenced against the Military Services Fitness Database (PMC2761744), which documents standardized physical fitness assessment procedures across U.S. military branches.

Frequently asked questions

What is a passing APFT score?
A Soldier must score a minimum of 60 points in each of the three APFT events — push-ups, sit-ups, and the 2-mile run — to pass. The minimum combined passing total is 180 points out of a possible 300. Failing any single event constitutes an overall APFT failure regardless of scores in the other two events.
How does age affect APFT scoring standards?
The APFT uses ten age brackets — 17–21 through 62+ — each with distinct minimum and maximum performance thresholds per FM 7-22. For example, a male Soldier aged 17–21 needs 42 push-ups to score 60 points, while a male Soldier aged 42–46 needs only 30 push-ups for the same 60-point score. This age adjustment ensures equivalent point scores reflect equivalent levels of military readiness across all brackets.
How is the 2-mile run scored differently from push-ups and sit-ups?
For push-ups and sit-ups, higher repetition counts produce higher scores. For the 2-mile run, a faster (lower) time produces a higher score. The APFT formula defines x_min as the slowest acceptable time (worth 60 points) and x_max as the fastest graded time (worth 100 points). Because both numerator and denominator become negative for a time between those bounds, the negatives cancel and the formula yields a correct positive score without any separate inversion step.
What score qualifies a Soldier for the Army Physical Fitness Badge?
A Soldier must achieve a total APFT score of 270 points or higher — earning at least 90 points in each of the three events — to qualify for the Army Physical Fitness Badge at the Distinguished level. This represents superior performance well above the 60-point minimum per event. A perfect APFT score is 300 points, meaning 100 points in each event, requiring maximum graded performance in all three disciplines.
Can a Soldier fail one event but still pass the APFT overall?
No. Per FM 7-22, a Soldier must score at least 60 points in every individual event to achieve an overall APFT pass. Scoring below 60 in any single event results in an overall APFT failure regardless of performance in the other two events. For example, 100 points on push-ups and 100 points on sit-ups cannot compensate for a 55-point run score — the result is still a failed APFT.
Why do male and female Soldiers have different APFT scoring tables?
FM 7-22 establishes separate scoring tables to account for documented physiological differences in upper-body muscular strength and cardiovascular capacity. In the 17–21 age group, males require 42 push-ups for a minimum passing score of 60 points, while females require 19 push-ups for the same 60-point score. Both standards are independently calibrated so that equivalent point scores represent equivalent levels of military readiness within each population.
